EXPLORING THE ROLE OF FRUITS, VEGETABLES AND ESSENTIAL OILS IN STRENGTHENING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM: A MINI REVIEW
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Fruits and vegetables are rich sources of bioactive compounds, including vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, carotenoids, flavonoids, and polyphenols, which possess strong antioxidant properties. These compounds help mitigate oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species, thereby supporting immune function. Essential oils and their volatile constituents have also been reported to exhibit antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and immunomodulatory effects. However, in conditions such as autoimmune diseases, immunodeficiency disorders, and allergic reactions, immune function may be impaired, increasing susceptibility to infections and inflammatory conditions. Evidence from existing literature suggests that regular consumption of fruits and vegetables, alongside the appropriate use of essential oils, may enhance immune response and reduce inflammation and oxidative damage. This review highlights the importance of fruits, vegetables, and essential oils as plant-based interventions that may improve immunological response. This mini review explores the potential role of fruits, vegetables, and essential oils in strengthening the immune system, particularly in individuals with compromised immunity.
